In works of narrative fiction, the setting includes the historical moment in time and geographic location in which a story takes place, and helps initiate the main backdrop for a story. Setting has been referred to as story world or milieu.

When you are stuck in the writing process, draw your story. I love to draw the settings of my stories. This unlocks my brain and helps me visualize the world my characters live in. The picture doesn’t have to  be pretty. Mine usually are not.

Drawing your story world can give you clues into how to navigate in your setting. Characters travel and move, they don’t stand still. Drawing the setting is a healthy way of bringing it to life so that you understand if the story world is realistic.
